There are plenty of indie teams out there who have picked up where Rare left off in the '90s, producing exciting new games like A Hat in Time, Snake Pass, and Super Lucky's Tale. Microsoft and Rare have been quick to hand out the British studio's IPs to other teams in the past, so perhaps a new Banjo-Kazooie could be made in the vein of Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, and Battletoads. Even if Rare were to have some of its developers create a new Banjo, the game could end up as something fans reject. A lot of the developers that created those original games have departed Rare to form Playtonic, and even created spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee in 2017. With production ongoing for both Sea of Thieves and Everwild, the Rare of today seems like it would not be the right choice to create a new entry in the Banjo-Kazooie series. Other than brief teaser trailers, very little has been revealed about the game and there's no firm release date as of yet. It's the same kind of vague language used to describe Sea of Thieves in its earliest state, so it's easy to assume that Everwild will be another game with a vast open-world meant to be filled in by player experience rather than set-in-stone missions. Dubbed Everwild, this fantasy adventure game is said to offer experiences that players of all types can share. Rare also revealed its next project back in 2019, and this upcoming title is much more in the vein of Sea of Thieves than it is a throwback to the N64.

This shared-world multiplayer pirate game got off to a rough start when it initially released, but it is now considered one of Xbox's biggest success stories of the Xbox One generation.

Rare has not announced a release window for Everwild, but it will be available on the Xbox Series X, as well as Xbox Game Pass and Windows 10.First announced during Microsoft's E3 showcase back in 2015, Sea of Thieves is the game that current-day Rare has been focused on. This new trailer makes Everwild look exploration-heavy, with multiple characters working together to explore the world around them, as well as dancing and appearing to conjure magic together. “We’re still playing around with gameplay ideas.” “Part of the reason we haven’t talked a lot about Everwild is because we’re still feeling a lot of these things out,” said Booty. The core gameplay loop of Everwild will remain a mystery for a little while longer, though. So the notion of, ‘What does it mean to nurture a world? What does it mean to be in nature?’” I think with Everwild, Louise and her leadership team are really passionate about giving players a world that they can just lose themselves in - you know, a lot of nature feels magical. However, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty recently told Polygon, “At its heart, we love the idea of Sea of Thieves players creating stories together. It’s not yet clear what playing Everwild will feel like or entail. While these hunter-gatherers appear to be human, the world in which they live looks much more magical and unusual than ours. This trailer shows us more humans who appear to be part of this same society, wearing patterned cloaks and earthy tones. The game was announced at Microsoft ’s X019 event in London, where it was confirmed that the game was in pre-production.

The brief teaser, also a cinematic one, showed some elements that appear again in the longer trailer: a society of what appear to be hunter-gatherers out exploring a world full of beautiful and sometimes frightening beasts. Everwild is a truly original new IP by Rare, set in a natural and magical world. Look at every game they have made in the last 20ish years under Microsoft from Sea of Thieves to Banjo to Conker to Kameo to Viva Pinata to Everwild, it is all super-creative stuff, generally filled with fresh ideas and pushing against the grain of typical AAA fare. Our first look at Everwild came last November at Microsoft’s X019 Inside Xbox presentation. 13 themightyant Wed 18th Jan 2023 Green-Bandit The one thing Rare definitely isn't lacking is CREATIVE talent. The latest trailer included more of its strange and beautiful world, but this is a cinematic trailer, so much of what players will be able to do in the game remains a mystery. Rare, the studio behind Sea of Thieves and Banjo-Kazooie, showed off a longer look at its upcoming project Everwild during Thursday’s Xbox Games Showcase.
